My Favorite Bible Verses About Minimalism
My drive to live a minimalist life comes from my faith. Though the word “minimalism” is never itself mentioned in the Bible, what scripture does talk about is money, greed, and seeking first the Kingdom of God. I’ve collected seven (the Biblical number of perfection!) of my favorite Bible verses about minimalism. These verses have been instrumental in shaping my worldview and belief that Christians are being called to a simpler life.
These verses are all taken from the Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition.
Hebrews 13:5
Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have; for He has said, “I will never fail you nor forsake you.
Matthew 19:21
Jesus said to him, “If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me”
Eccleasties 5:10
He who loves money will not be satisfied with money; nor he who loves wealth, with gain: this also is vanity
Luke 6:24
But woe to you that are rich, for you have received your consolation.
Matthew 6:24
No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon
Luke 12:15
Then he said to them, ‘Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions
1 Timothy 6:7-9
For we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world; but if we have food and clothing, with these we shall be content. But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and hurtful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction.
